How reading time is calculated

For forward estimates, seconds = word count ÷ WPM × 60. Target planning uses estimated words = target minutes × WPM, rounded to the nearest whole word.

Reading vs read-aloud time

Brysbaert (2019), Journal of Memory and Language, reports research means of 238 WPM for English adult silent non-fiction reading and 183 WPM for English adult oral reading. These are reference values, not universal averages. Language, age, accessibility needs, text difficulty, pauses, emphasis, and audience interaction all change delivery time; oral reading is not the same as public speaking.

FAQ

Is reading time exact?

No. It is an estimate based on word count and your selected rate; language, difficulty, formatting, and familiarity affect actual time.

What WPM should I use?

Use 238 WPM for English adult silent non-fiction reading and 183 WPM for English adult oral reading as reference starting points, then adjust.

How long does 1,000 words take?

At 238 WPM it is about 4 minutes 12 seconds; at 183 WPM it is about 5 minutes 28 seconds.

Is speaking time the same as reading aloud?

No. Presentations can take longer because pauses, emphasis, and audience interaction are not modeled.

Is my text uploaded?

The calculator processes text locally and does not send it to a server. Analytics and advertising may receive ordinary page, device, and usage data.

How are words counted?

Unicode letters and numbers are counted, including internal apostrophes and hyphens.
